A still life (or
Fr. "nature morte", literally – "dead nature") is a genre of the Fine Arts
dedicated to the image of group-organized things. Except for inanimate
objects, the wildlife subjects portrayed in a still life painting are
isolated from their natural mediums and thereby transformed into the things
depicted, – a fish on a table, flowers in a bouquet, etc. The image of
living, moving creatures such as insects, birds, animals or people can
sometimes be a part of a still life painting but only in so far as it
supplements the main motive. Compared with other genres, the significance of
small subjects rising above a living context increases in a still life.
Heighten attention is given to structure and details of objects and to
surface texture.
