Sgraffito is monumental
décor in the form of a one-color or multi-color, ‘scratched’ wall mural.
Sgraffito is created as follows: one or several layers of different colored
stucco are one by one spread on a wall. When the plaster has dried, the
outer layer is scratched, or in some places completely removed, to a depth
exposing the vital layer of lime, thus creating the required design and
color. Various scrapers and cutters are used for this work.
The first Sgraffito
appeared in the 18th Century. Following a long period of
obscurity, Sgraffito regained popularity in the 19th and 20th
Centuries. This form of décor is mainly applied to interiors. The clarity
and silhouette of the drawing inherent to the Sgraffito process, as well as
the absence of halftones and color transfers, are most completely embodied
in ornamental compositions. |
