Fresco (from Ital.
fresco, literally – fresh, crude) is a technique of monumental and
decoration painting in paints on pure or limy water on fresh, crude plaster.
While drying, the absorption of paints into a material occurs and the
delicate fastening gauzy layer forms and as a
result especially resistant and durable decors are formed. The fresco is the
basic technique used in mural painting. There also exists a similar method
of painting on dry plaster – "a secco".
The fresco is an ancient
and, at the same time, original technique of interior decorating, allowing
the creation of monumental compositions organically bound to architectural
surfaces, i.e. to ceilings, walls, arches or in other words, any space in
compliance with a unified design. This technique still enjoys great
popularity.
