Artist Anastasia Hohriakova

From the very first glance, the artwork of Anastasia Hohriakova is striking because of its wide range of artistic versatility and high professionalism. The Artist creates her works in various genres and with different techniques; she can create compositions for very different subjects - from simple genre scenes to mythological and biblical themes - which are transformed through the Artist’s personality, carrying a very personal touch of the Artist’s perception. This high level of professionalism comes as the result of training in, probably, the only two higher educational establishments offering studies in academic art and drawing: the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Surikov’s Art Institute in Moscow.

The fact that Anastasia graduated from the section of monumental art should also be emphasized. On one hand, art in architecture enforces the perception of geometric planes necessary for any artist; on the other hand, it allows us to constantly come back to the masterpieces of wall painting, whose long historical pedigree stretches from Ancient Egypt to the Present.

A monumentalist is always more educated than a simple easel painter. Naturally, rigid professionalism and retrospective awareness of the history of art slows down one's natural perception, but this is not the case with Anastasia Hohriakova. She nurtures and maintains a strong connection between her previously mentioned education and awareness of art history, and her abundance of powerful unleashed emotions that represent Anastasia’s true nature.

In her work, therefore, there emerge compositions seeming to be quiet, noble and beautiful at first glance. Upon closer observation, however, they strike the observer with the sharpness and suddenness of her technique, the precision and cleverness of the plot, and the drama hidden under its romantic veil.

It is obvious that each and every one of Anastasia’s compositions presents an allegorical story from the Artist’s life. Her world is not only a series of blinding visual images, searching for an art form worthy of capturing and immortalizing their beauty. For her, the world she inhabits is an endless chain of passions becoming mythical tales woven through with an incredible number of senses. Anastasia Hohriakova does not create the form; she relies there on the great art heritage of past eras. This trust and reliance helps her bring the blazing world of passion into the condition of an evolved balance.

It also happens that Anastasia Hohriakova looks around herself and notices a wonderful warm scene about old village women and a man sitting by a house (The Klatch, 2007). How ingeniously caught and implemented was the subject of At a Cashier' Desk of a Prague WC (2004)! How masterly and with the precision of a sniper was The Volleyball Players (2002) painted! And how much unexpected happiness is spilt between the two bases of the columns in A Newspaper (2007).

The desire to formulate happiness and hope, which she inherited – along with her professionalism - from the Soviet times, is the core motive of Anastasia’s art. Her positive attitude to life is very unconventional in today's modern art world. Deep irony reigns here, because Anastasia's art, despite the absolutely quixotic ideals which it contains in overwhelming abundance, fits quite well into this modern art context as a bright, friendly and intelligent phenomenon.
